A one-woman stage production exploring the Greek immigrant experience in America will be performed in Los Angeles this winter, as Nick the Greek arrives at the Odyssey Theatre on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
The performance is presented as a benefit for the Hellenic American Women’s Council – Pacific Region, in partnership with the Basil P. Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies at Loyola Marymount University.
Written and performed by Angeliki Giannakopoulos, the show tells the true story of Nick, a Greek immigrant whose life unfolds across four decades, from a small village near Kalamata to the United States, in pursuit of the American Dream. The production is directed by Amy Chaffee.
A Story Rooted in Greek and American History
Spanning more than forty years, Nick the Greek begins in rural Greece during World War II. Nick survives the war, learns the trade of tailoring, marries, and becomes a father. One day, carrying a single suitcase, he leaves his family behind and travels to America, chasing a promise he has heard since childhood: that opportunity waits for those willing to work for it.
The show traces the emotional and moral cost of immigration, asking what must be sacrificed along the way. Family, heritage, and home all come into question as Nick navigates life in a new country. While rooted in one man’s experience, the story reflects a journey shared by generations of immigrants, including many in the Greek-American community.
A Timely Immigration Narrative
At its core, Nick the Greek is an immigration story told through a deeply personal lens. The production pays tribute to the parents and grandparents who left everything behind to build a future for their children, while also speaking directly to the children of immigrants who grew up between cultures.
The show has been performed to sold-out audiences Off-Broadway in New York, as well as in Los Angeles and Chicago, and continues to tour nationally. In 2025, the production received the Producer’s Choice Award at the Z Fringe Festival in Virginia Beach.
About the Artist
Angeliki Giannakopoulos began her career as an actress before expanding into writing, producing, and directing. She previously worked at NBCUniversal as an on-air promotional producer and has produced multiple feature-length documentaries.
Her documentary My Child – Mothers of War aired on PBS, was introduced by Susan Sarandon, and led to a TEDx talk titled Peace Through Motherhood. She has also served as Executive Director of the WACO Theater Center, where she remains a board member.
In addition to Nick the Greek, Giannakopoulos is the playwright of A Marriage, Ten Stabs for Ten Bullets, and My Child. In 2018, she co-founded SmartAngel Entertainment with nine-time Emmy Award winner Jean Smart, developing new projects for stage and screen.
