Odyssey Charter School, based in Wilmington, Delaware, continues to lead Greek Independence Day celebrations across the state, honoring a long-standing tradition of cultural excellence and community engagement. On March 24, the school proudly represented the Greek-American community at the annual Flag Raising Ceremony at Freedom Plaza, graciously hosted by Wilmington’s Mayor.
The event began with a blessing and opening remarks by Fr. Christophoros of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, setting a tone of reflection and reverence. Mayor John Carney officially proclaimed March 25, 2026, as Greek Independence Day in the City of Wilmington. The ceremony was attended by Odyssey’s leadership, faculty, students, community members, and distinguished guests, including AHEPA representative Mr. Mike Kerefides, who offered remarks highlighting the importance of preserving Hellenic heritage across generations.
Odyssey’s middle school immersion students, under the guidance of their teacher, Ms. Tsiantou, delivered a powerful performance featuring poetry, historical excerpts, and songs in Greek. Notably, students performed selections even in Katharevousa Greek with remarkable confidence, accuracy, and no hesitation, reflecting their deep commitment to and mastery of their Greek language studies. Their presentation showcased not only linguistic excellence but also a profound connection to Greece’s historical legacy.
This year’s ceremony was further enriched by live music performed by Mr. Tsigkakos and Mr. Giannopoulos, enhancing the atmosphere of commemoration and cultural pride.
Dr. Ioanna Lekkakou addressed attendees by emphasizing the vital connection between historical memory and the practical, lived value of learning Greek in students’ academic and personal journeys. Mr. Pappas, in his remarks, drew meaningful parallels between the Greek War of Independence and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, underscoring the importance of cultural connections, shared democratic ideals, and mutual understanding.
As Odyssey Charter School continues to promote Greek language and culture while advancing its forward-looking educational vision, these celebrations stand as a powerful testament to the enduring values of Hellenic paideia, community engagement, and global citizenship.
