Broomall, PA – Macedonian carolers sang their way through Greek-American homes and businesses this weekend, sharing the holiday spirit with traditional Greek Christmas songs.
At each stop over, the singers started with a knock on the door and request to sing. Greeted by surprised and thrilled homeowners, the singing troupe of gleeful men and women joined together with song. The host sang and clapped along, treats were handed out. Holiday season cookies or drink were shared, along for wishes of a blessed new year, before they headed to the next home.
The custom was brought from Greece by immigrants to America. It now continues to be part of the fabric of preserving Greek heritage during Christmas.
The annual get together is organized through the Pan-Macedonian Association of Greater Philadelphia. This year’s funds will go for much needed folk attire for their popular and well established dance group Youth of Alexander the Great Spirit of Macedonian Dance Group.
