November 26, 2012 – St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Upper Darby, PA – The battle for first place in the Greek Orthodox Girls and Boys Basketball League took place this past weekend, as Evangelismos Church of Bustleton Avenue in Philadelphia faced Holy Trinity of Egg Harbor in a pair of tightly contested games. Both matchups saw leads change hands multiple times before the winners emerged.

Girls

Heading into Week 8, both teams had been making strong pushes for the top spot. Holy Trinity, experienced and well-coached, squared off against the “Big Girls from the Boulevard” — Evangelismos — whose raw talent has made them a force this season. In the end, a few timely three-pointers and tough, seasoned defense gave Holy Trinity the edge. Final score: 22–17, Holy Trinity (Egg Harbor).

Boys

The boys’ matchup featured two teams tied for the league lead. Holy Trinity entered with discipline and strong coaching, but Evangelismos had won their last three encounters, including a playoff game last year. Both teams traded baskets early, staying close through the first period.

By late in the second quarter, Evangelismos had built a 20-point lead, showing the growth and maturity of their squad. A late third-period surge by Holy Trinity narrowed the margin, but Evangelismos stayed true to their game plan, controlling the boards and playing solid defense. The decisive win gave them sole possession of first place — and the look of a team that will be hard to stop. Final score: 47–37, Evangelismos (Bustleton).
