Pontian Day Of Remembrance

Every year they gather to remember. This year, like others, the Pontian community of Philadelphia congregated again in front of the Eagle headed monolith to mark their day of remembrance, May 19. Following church service at St. Demetrios in Upper Darby, a line of members from the church and from the Pontian club house “Akritai”, marched next door for this memorial service.

A song of lament for the lost homeland and those that perished as part of the first genocide of the 20th century was sung by Ifigeneia Pavlidou-Ikonomou, President of the Pontian club house “Akritai” and accompanied by Christos Tiktakpanidis on Lyra of New York. The service concluded with a laying of the wreath. For more information about the Pontian genocide, visit here.
