The Rev. Protopresbyter Andrew Eugenis, who served the Saint George Greek Orthodox community in Ocean Township for nearly 25 years, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2026, following an illness. He was 66.
Father Andrew was born November 28, 1959, in Chicago to Nicholas and Dorothy Eugenis. The youngest of three children, he grew up with his brother, Ted, and sister, Irene, in the community of Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, Illinois.
As a boy, he enjoyed the outdoors and played ice hockey. He also had a talent for fixing things, earning the nickname “MacGyver” among relatives and friends. After graduating from East Leyden High School in 1978, he entered the electro-mechanical engineering field. His work took him across the United States and as far as Tokyo.
He later enrolled at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, to prepare for the priesthood.
While studying at Holy Cross, he returned to Chicago for a Greek Orthodox young adult conference in 1988, where he met Angela Hadjimarkos. They maintained a long-distance relationship and married in July 1991 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Clifton, New Jersey.
Father Andrew graduated from Holy Cross in May 1993. He was ordained a deacon and began serving at Holy Trinity-Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Cincinnati. He later moved with his family to Houston, where he was ordained to the priesthood and served at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
After seven years in Houston, he accepted a call to Saint George, then located in Asbury Park. His engineering experience later helped him guide the parish through the development of its new church complex and relocation from Asbury Park to Ocean Township.
For nearly 25 years at Saint George, Father Andrew shared in the milestones and difficult moments of parish life, from baptisms and weddings to illness and funerals. He worked closely with young people and remained involved in the parish’s ministries in Ocean Township.
His service also extended beyond the church. He served as a chaplain with the Port Authority Police Department of New York and New Jersey and with the Oakhurst Fire Department.
Father Andrew and Presvytera Angela raised five sons: Niko, Jordan, Teddy, Stefanos and Markos.
He is survived by his wife, Angela; his sons; Niko’s wife, Anastasia; his granddaughter, Angelica; his brother, Ted, and Ted’s wife, Sue; his sister, Irene; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was predeceased by his parents.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 22, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 West Park Avenue in Ocean Township. The funeral service will take place at the church Thursday, July 23, at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in Father Andrew’s memory be made to Saint George Greek Orthodox Church.
