Netflix will begin streaming Romain Gavras’ Sacrifice in the United States and France on Oct. 16, making the film widely available after its festival premiere last year. Much of it was shot in Greece, including locations in Drama, Athens, Lavrio and Santorini.

The satirical thriller is Gavras’ first English-language feature. Chris Evans plays Mike Tyler, a movie star attending an environmental charity gala that is taken over by a radical group led by Anya Taylor-Joy’s Joan. The cast also includes Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek Pinault, John Malkovich, Ambika Mod, Sam Richardson, Charli xcx and Yung Lean.

Sacrifice is an official Greece-UK co-production. Heretic’s production listing names the Athens-based company among the production companies and Giorgos Karnavas among the producers. More than 200 Greek artists and technicians worked on the film, according to the Athens Epidaurus Festival.

A large portion of the Greek production took place at Pireos 260 in Athens, where the Athens Epidaurus Festival is based. The festival participated as a co-producer.

The production also filmed at the marble quarries of Volakas in Drama, as ERT News reported during the shoot. The quarry provided the setting for the gala at the center of the story. Gavras later told Netflix that 200 extras in formal dress were brought to the northern Greek location for the sequence.

Filming reached Santorini as well. The Hellenic Film Commission identifies Nea Kameni, the volcanic island inside the caldera, as one of the locations used for Sacrifice.

ERT joined the production as a co-producer and said its agreement includes first and exclusive broadcast rights on its television channels and ERTFLIX. No broadcast date has been announced. ERT announced its involvement in November 2024.

Gavras was born in Paris to Greek-born filmmaker Costa-Gavras. He has said that Greek mythology was part of his childhood and influenced Sacrifice, which he co-wrote with playwright and Succession writer Will Arbery.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, where it screened in the Special Presentations program.

After its Oct. 16 Netflix release in the United States and France, Sacrifice will be presented for the first time in Greece at the Onassis Stegi in Athens on Oct. 30.
