Jeffersonville, PA – Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church opened its Grecian Festival this weekend with a strong Friday evening crowd, live music, dancing, and the warm parish welcome that brings people back year after year.

By early evening, the church grounds were busy with families, friends, parishioners, and visitors moving between the food tents, indoor hall, rides, and marketplace. The smell of charcoal carried across the parking area. Music and conversation gave the festival the feel of a summer community gathering.

For many visitors, food was the first stop. Lamb shank, pastitsio, gyros, spanakopita, tiropita, and other Greek favorites came steadily from the kitchen and grills. Desserts and Greek coffee gave many guests a reason to stay after dinner. Volunteers kept the lines moving throughout the evening.

Saint Sophia’s parishioners helped shape the feel of the night. They greeted visitors, served food, answered questions, and checked in on guests across the grounds. Their presence kept the festival from feeling like just another large public event. It felt personal, even with a crowd.

As the sun went down and the lights came on, the folk dancers drew one of the evening’s biggest crowds. Dressed in traditional costumes, they stepped into the open space and performed for visitors gathered around them. Soon after, guests joined the line dances, linking hands with parishioners and moving together to the music.

Nearby, children moved between the rides and food tents. Inside the hall, vendors offered icons, Greek jewelry, religious items, and imported goods. Church tours gave visitors a quieter moment inside the sanctuary and a chance to see the parish beyond the festival grounds.

Friday night showed why the Saint Sophia Grecian Festival remains a familiar stop on the region’s Greek festival calendar. The food, dancing, rides, marketplace, and church tours drew visitors in, but the heart of the evening was the parish itself, welcoming guests onto its grounds and into its traditions.
