The Holy Institution Panagia Soumela, in cooperation with the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA and Canada and the Pontian Youth Association of USA & Canada, has opened registration for its Spring 2026 Pontiaka (Romeika) language classes.
The program aims to support the preservation and continued use of Pontiaka, the traditional dialect of Pontian Greeks, through structured language instruction for community members and younger generations.
Pontiaka, also known as Romeika, is one of the oldest surviving Greek dialects and remains a central element of Pontian cultural identity. While its everyday use has declined over time, organized teaching initiatives have become an important means of safeguarding the language within the Greek diaspora.
Classes are expected to be held on Saturdays. Organizers note that, due to scheduling limitations, only two classes can be offered per Saturday. The final selection of class levels for the spring and fall terms will be determined based on overall registration interest.
Instruction will be led by Arhontoula Konstantinidou, who has experience teaching Pontiaka in community-based educational settings.
Registration for the Spring 2026 semester is now open. Interested participants are encouraged to complete the registration form. After they do, they will be informed of the confirmed class levels and schedules.
