Upper Darby, PA – St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Upper Darby is undergoing a major renovation, as work begins on replacing the church’s front facade—nearly 47 years after the building was first erected.
The project addresses a longstanding concern: the original entrance, with its large glass wall and modern-style doors, did not reflect the traditional Byzantine architecture typically associated with Greek Orthodox churches. Over the years, both current and former Metropolitans had expressed the need to bring the building’s design more in line with Orthodox tradition.
That process is now underway. The glass wall and doors at the front of the church are being removed and replaced with a new stone facade and wooden doors, crafted to reflect the sacred architectural heritage of the faith. A temporary wall has been installed during construction, while materials are being prepared off-site.
The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately $110,000. Parishioners and friends of the community are invited to support the effort. Donations can be sent to:
