Upper Darby, PA – St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Upper Darby is undergoing a significant renovation, as the front facade of the church is being replaced nearly 47 years after it was first built. The construction addresses an architectural concern that has been raised for decades: the original entrance, with its modern glass wall and doors, did not reflect the traditional Byzantine style characteristic of Orthodox churches.
Both the current and former Metropolitans had urged the parish to correct the design in order to align the appearance of the church with Orthodox liturgical architecture. Now, those calls are finally being answered.
The glass front is being removed, and a temporary wall has been installed while the new facade is being prepared. The completed structure will feature a stone wall and handcrafted wooden doors—materials and design elements that honor the aesthetic and spiritual traditions of the faith.
The cost of the project is estimated at $110,000. Parishioners, supporters, and members of the wider Greek-American community who wish to contribute to the renovation are encouraged to do so.
