Cherry Hill, NJ – The Delaware Valley Greek Orthodox Basketball League tipped off its post-season playoffs yesterday at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church, where a capacity crowd filled the gym for four intense matchups.
In what was arguably the biggest game of the day, fifth-seeded St. Demetrios staged a comeback to defeat St. George (Media). St. George held a 15–6 halftime lead, but St. Demetrios rallied in the second half to edge out a 16–15 win, earning their spot in the second round.
In game two, St. George (Media – boys) battled St. Demetrios (Upper Darby – boys) in a close contest. The teams traded baskets until the final minutes, but St. George’s strong late-game defense secured a 35–32 victory and a trip to the next round.
Game three saw #3 seed St. Luke’s face #6 seed St. Thomas. St. Luke’s executed a disciplined game plan on both offense and defense, cruising to a 29–17 win over the host team. They will host the second round next week.
In the final matchup, Evangelismos (Bustleton – boys) arrived determined to prove themselves the dominant force. While their offense had some struggles, their relentless defense shut down St. Luke’s boys, sealing a decisive 42–26 victory.
