On September 4, volunteers will gather on the hillsides of Paiania, just outside Athens. With water tanks and gloves in hand, they will lend their care to saplings planted here over the last two years. These young trees represent the beginnings of recovery from Greece’s devastating wildfire seasons.
This Diaspora-led initiative is part of The Hellenic Initiative (THI)’s Plant A Tree program, which has already helped plant more than 25,000 trees in fire-affected parts of Attica, Evia, Peloponesse, and the islands. In Paiania alone, approximately 2,000 saplings were planted in 2022 and 2023. This September’s event focuses on stewardship: watering and fertilizing the young trees, and ensuring the survivors thrive beyond their fragile first years.
Healing Burned Landscapes
Greece has endured significant wildfire damage in recent years. The tragic blaze in Mati in 2018, the vast destruction in Evia in 2021, and the evacuations in Rhodes in 2023 left behind more than charred land. They left urgent questions about how to rebuild and how to protect these landscapes for future generations.
THI and its partners have stepped into this challenge. By pairing local volunteer efforts with support from the global diaspora, they are helping the land heal one sapling at a time.
A Diaspora Effort
THI’s work is powered not only by teams in Greece but also by Greeks and friends of Greece worldwide. Their donations have turned concern into action, plantations into forests, and grief into tangible hope.
The September 4 event is co-organized with the FETA Organization, which is the event’s major donor and has helped plant over 1,200 trees in Greece this year alone. We4all is the environmental partner, and Axion Hellas is the community partner. Volunteers of all ages, from Athens locals to visitors from London, New York, or Philadelphia, come together on the same hillside, sharing the same task: nurture a future rooted in the land.
Beyond Planting Day
Planting a sapling takes minutes, but growing a forest takes years. That is why THI’s approach is different. Reforestation is treated not as a one-day photo opportunity but as a generational commitment. Volunteers return again and again, watering and fertilizing the saplings until they have a chance to survive and become trees.
Their patience is a powerful metaphor. It shows that diaspora support is not about headlines or short-lived gestures. It is about steadily investing in a living future.
Roots That Hold
In time, these hillsides will offer shade, restore wildlife habitat, safeguard the soil from erosion, and look like they have always been forests.
