This past Saturday morning, a long awaited dream for parishioners of St. Sophia, Greek Orthodox Church in Norristown Pennsylvania finally came true. Thyranoixia (the opening of the church doors) was realized for the community some 40 years later. On a beautiful sunny and brisk day, members of the faith and community gathered. Some 350 people attended the event that began in a plastic tent in the church parking lot. Metropolitan Evangelos conducted and led his flock from the tent to a ceremonial blessing in front of the church doors around 10:00 am.
The first Liturgy service followed the ribbon cutting ceremony that held back the excited crowed that gathered outside its doors. Some came holding candles, while others carried icons and smiles as they entered. Some two hours later, the parishioners retired to the historic hall for a lunch. This one time church would continue to serve the community, but now, it would be used specifically for social affairs.
