The Wilmington Greek Festival has kept Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral busy all week, from lunchtime takeout lines to evening dancing under clear June skies. With festivities continuing through Saturday, there is still time to join the celebration on North Broom Street.

For decades, the festival has been described as the unofficial beginning of summer in Wilmington. The description feels earned. By midday, office workers, neighbors, and longtime attendees are arriving for lunch. By evening, families fill the tables outside as Greek music carries across the cathedral grounds.

During the day, the festival becomes a busy lunch stop for downtown workers, neighbors, and returning guests. People can walk into the grounds at 808 N. Broom Street or order ahead through greekfestde.com for curbside pickup. Online orders allow customers to choose a pickup time, pull up along the south side of the cathedral, and have their meals brought directly to the car.

Inside the community center, Holy Trinity parishioners serve trays of pastichio, moussaka, spanakopita, roasted lamb, and other traditional dishes. Outside, gyros and souvlaki come fresh from the grills as guests settle around picnic tables with full plates and cold drinks.

The dessert cases offer another reason to stay a little longer, with baklava, koulourakia, and other Greek sweets served alongside coffee and wine.

As the afternoon moves into evening, the festival takes on a different rhythm. A live Greek band keeps the courtyard moving, and dance lines begin to form across the pavement. Experienced dancers hold the line together while first-timers watch a few steps before being encouraged to join.

Holy Trinity’s youth folk dance groups also perform in traditional costumes. Their performances show the role younger parish members play in keeping the festival’s dances and traditions alive.

That sense of continuity is part of what gives the Wilmington Greek Festival its character. Volunteers move between serving meals, greeting returning visitors, and helping newcomers find their way around the grounds. Many work alongside relatives, friends, and fellow parishioners, continuing an event that has become part of the community’s yearly rhythm.

Guests can also step inside Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral for tours and learn more about the parish’s faith, architecture, and iconography. The cathedral offers a quieter pause from the outside activity and a reminder that the festival is rooted not only in food and celebration but also in the spiritual life of the community hosting it.

Even when the grounds are crowded, the festival still feels personal. Volunteers carrying trays stop to greet old friends. Children move between family tables and the dance floor. New visitors are welcomed into the same lines as parishioners who have attended for years.

The Wilmington Greek Festival continues through Saturday, June 6, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 808 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, Delaware.

There is still time to stop by for lunch, stay for the music and experience the welcome that has made the festival a Wilmington summer tradition.
