Media, PA – “Yia” means “hello” in Greek, and its connotation evokes the lifestyle Greece is so famous for, especially when it comes to dining. Now the term has found a home as a fast-casual restaurant on State Street in Media, Delaware County.

The sign outside reads “Yia, It’s all Greek to Me.” When entering, you can see why. Inside, the decor is of a Greek island taverna, with photographs of iconic places of Greece. High top blue and white chairs shipped right from Greece line the countertops. While glazed glass eyes hang everywhere to bring good luck and keep bad karma away. And if that’s not enough, everyone inside can speak a little Greek or is Greek.

“We’re a family-friendly place, with homemade traditional Greek food,” says Marina Liapis one of the owners. YIa opened it’s doors just six months ago and is quickly growing in popularity. Even amongst the Greek community, that has embraced this eatery as a favorite, Yia has managed to make waves. “We want to thank the Greek-American community for their continued support and believing in us as we honor our Greek heritage,” added Marina Liampis.

We visited Yia on a Wednesday afternoon, where we found it buzzing with customers. Both inside and out, we saw waitresses running out food to the tables, that was served quick and looked inviting. It’s all fresh and simple. From a Greek salad to a plate of Moussaka the food tasted like home for this Greek. But what makes this dining experience worthy is the quality. Eating a Greek salad is reminiscent of having one in Greece, where the flavors are amplified under an Aegean sun. “Sotiris Bapalis is responsible for picking the vegetables and maintaining quality,” says Marina. Bapalis is the other half owner of Yia. Bampalis arrived four years ago from Piraeus, Greece, and has been dreaming of opening a Greek restaurant. “We’re very confident and proud of what we’re doing here,” Bampalis stated with pride. “We have a dream for another store as well,” he added, and we know that the owners of Yia, It’s All Greek To Me, will be just as successful with any new stores.
