The American Hellenic Institute is accepting applications on a rolling basis for its internship program in Washington, D.C., open to college students and recent graduates interested in foreign policy, government, journalism and related fields.
The unpaid program is based at AHI’s Hellenic House headquarters on 16th Street NW, about five blocks from the White House. During the academic year, interns are expected to work at least 15 hours per week. Summer applicants are given preference if they are available to work full time.
Interns assist with policy research, track congressional activity, prepare communications and work on issues involving U.S. relations with Greece and Cyprus. They may also attend congressional hearings, policy briefings and events at Washington think tanks.
The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent graduates. Applicants must either be enrolled at a college or university or have graduated within 12 months of the start of the internship. International students may apply if they have a current student visa or work permit.
Academic credit may be available when arranged through the student’s college or university. AHI does not provide housing, so interns are responsible for their own accommodations in the Washington area.
Applicants are asked to submit a completed internship application, resume, cover letter, academic transcript, a three-to-five-page writing sample and at least three professional references. Letters of recommendation are optional.
AHI says more than 300 students and recent graduates have participated in the internship program over the past five decades. For students interested in foreign affairs, government, journalism or advocacy, the program offers a working view of how Greece- and Cyprus-related issues are followed in Washington.
