Doxology at Saint George Cathedral Opens Philadelphia Greek Parade Day

The official Doxology for Greek Independence Day was held today at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia, marking the spiritual opening of the city’s Greek Independence Day parade day.

The service was part of the April 26, 2026, celebration organized by the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Philadelphia and Greater Delaware Valley. Located at 256 South 8th Street, Saint George served as the morning gathering point before many participants continued to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the annual parade.

His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey presided on the Sunday of the Myrrh-Bearing Women.

The morning brought together clergy, the Evzones of Greece’s Presidential Guard, community leaders, families, parishioners, and members of the wider Greek-American community before the celebration moved outdoors for the parade.

For many in Philadelphia’s Greek-American community, the Doxology connects the commemoration of Greek Independence Day with prayer, remembrance, and the presence of the local church before the larger civic celebration begins in the city.

The Philadelphia Greek Independence Day Parade is scheduled to follow later today on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with parishes, schools, cultural organizations, youth groups, and community associations taking part.
