Philadelphia, PA – It was a historic first for the Greek-American community of Philadelphia. The Greek American Heritage Society of Philadelphia hosted its first ever Photographic Tour and Contest at Estia Restaurant. The event featured historic photographs submitted about the Greek-American community from all over the Delaware Valley. “Greektown” in Olde City Philadelphia was a particular favorite for many that attended and had lived in. Barber shops, bars, family businesses were Greeks first settled as business owners were featured.

Throughout the evening, guests mingled over images and shared the stories associated with the each moment. “This night has special meaning. Our history is being brought to light,” said Georgia Chletcos Chair of the event. Just two months ago, the photo tour themed idea came to light during a series of weekly meetings. The original concept is a first for Philadelphia’s Greek-American community that started in the area of 12th and Locust Street in Olde city.

“This will be an annual event where we come together and share our common history and stories,” added GAHSP, President Nick Yiantsos. The event concluded with Yiantsos awarding and recognizing images in categories, such as best portrait, religion, patriotic image.

Individuals each took to the podium and spoke about the photos and their importance. Arguable the most impressive images captured the spirit of the first Greek settlers. Black and White images of proud immigrants in their stores and in front of their businesses brought on a great sense of pride, that was echoed by its ancestors who shared their family heirloom.
