St. Demetrios Greek School Celebrates Ellinomatheia Success 1

The parish of St. Demetrios in Upper Darby is celebrating a proud achievement this summer. Students of the parish’s Greek Language School who took part in the Ellinomatheia examinations earned excellent results, a milestone that highlights both their dedication and the school’s long tradition of teaching Greek in the Greater Philadelphia area.

For more than 75 years, the St. Demetrios Greek School has welcomed children from across the region, offering a nine-month program that meets twice a week for three hours. The school serves students from a wide range of backgrounds, from those who hear Greek at home to those with no prior exposure.

The curriculum focuses on listening, speaking, writing and oral comprehension, blending traditional methods with modern interactive tools. The aim is to prepare students for success in the Ellinomatheia exams, an internationally recognized certification of Greek language proficiency.

Beyond academics, the school fosters a spirit of filotimo, which embodies pride, respect and generosity, and extends into parish life. Events and shared experiences help students build friendships and carry their sense of parea well beyond the classroom.

Parish leaders noted that this year’s results reflect not only the commitment of the students but also the support of parents and the dedication of teachers. “This success is an honor for the school and a joy for our parish family,” the announcement stated.

Registrations for the 2025–2026 school year are now open. Families can complete enrollment directly through the St. Demetrios Greek School registration page.
