Students from Greek-American schools in New York were recognized for their work exploring the shared ideals of the Greek Revolution and the American War of Independence, following the recent “Bridging Revolutions” event in Astoria.
The program, part of the 2026 commemorations marking 205 years since the Greek Revolution of 1821 and 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, brought together historical presentation, music, and student engagement around questions of freedom, identity, and cultural memory.
A central component of the event was a student competition inviting participants to examine how the two revolutions connect and what those ideas mean in a Greek-American context today.
The competition winners were announced as follows:
- First Prize went to Alexia Theodoropoulou of Saint Demetrios Greek-American School in Astoria.
- Second Prize went to Nikoleta Kakava of Holy Cross School in Brooklyn.
- Third Prize went to Stella Galani, also of Saint Demetrios Greek-American School in Astoria.
Saint Demetrios School also received special recognition. The honor was accepted by Principal Eleni Karagiorgos and Parents and Guardians Association President Nikos Papaioannou, with the award presented by Parade President Lou Katsos.
The event’s academic presentations were led by Dr. Konstantinos Chatzidimitriou and Dr. Evangelos Athanasopoulos, while the musical portion was directed by Grigoris Maninakis, with vocal and instrumental performances woven into the program.
Co-organizers included Nomiki Kastana and Dimitris Filios on behalf of the Greek Parade Committee.
