Lansdowne, PA – On Memorial Day, members, families, and friends of Eleftheria Chapter 6633 gathered in tribute outside their longtime meeting hall. The scene felt familiar, shaped by years of tradition and shared purpose. At the heart of the event was a table with Federal Street Pretzels—a custom that closes out the ceremony each year and brings everyone together.
The Eleftheria VFW Post 6633 was established after World War II, when Greek American veterans returned home seeking connection and a way to honor those who did not return. Each year, the gathering has its own rhythm—greetings, remembrance, and moments that linger quietly in the air.
This Memorial Day, Father Alexandros from St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church led the prayers. His presence provided a sense of unity, as he honored both the fallen and those present, reflecting the post’s origins in the struggle for Greek independence and in service to America.
The gathering included prayers and moments of reflection, with the community honoring the service and sacrifices of Greek American veterans.
As the ceremony wound down, the familiar ritual of sharing Federal Street Pretzels began—a simple gesture that marks the day’s close. There was no need to spell out what the ceremony meant; it was evident in the way people lingered after the last prayer, carrying memories home with them.
In Lansdowne, the tradition continues, one story and one pretzel at a time.
