Media, PA – Greek Independence Day poems and songs were performed on Sunday at St. George Greek Orthodox church. The pre k through 8th grade classes united for the day and shined with pride as they celebrated along with families and friends, the historic day.
The day was highlighted by a theatrical performance called “To kako synapantima”, A Bad Encounter. Based on the story of a Cretan writer, it was about the period that Crete was under Ottoman rule, right before the revolution of 1866.
A Cretan villager goes to work on a Sunday and meets the Turkish Governor, who chastises him for not observing his religion correctly and decides to turn him into a Turk. The Cretan manages to escape this terrible fate, with the support of his wife and the help of the village priest.
