Galloway, NJ – Last week, Stockton University’s Lower Art Gallery in Galloway became a hub of cultural and historical exploration with the opening of “Byzantine Reflections: Ancient and Modern in Church Architecture and Iconography.” The highly anticipated exhibition, curated by Tom Papademetriou, Ph.D., officially launched this past Friday and will remain on display until March. A collaborative effort between the Dean C. and Zoë S. Pappas Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies and the Stockton University Art Galleries, the exhibition offers a deep dive into the enduring legacy of Byzantine art and architecture.
“Byzantine Reflections” presents a compelling narrative of Byzantine creativity, connecting the past with the present through the works of prominent artists. Ahmet Ertuğ’s striking photographs capture the architectural majesty of Byzantine churches, including the revered Hagia Sophia and the Church of Chora in Istanbul. These images offer viewers a glimpse into the grandeur of Byzantine sacred spaces, reflecting both spiritual ideals and artistic brilliance.
Christ Kamages brings a contemporary perspective to Byzantine architectural traditions. His innovative designs integrate ancient domes and arches into modern sacred spaces, demonstrating the continued relevance of Byzantine architectural principles. Meanwhile, George Kordis merges traditional techniques with digital iconography, showcasing a dynamic evolution of Byzantine artistry through monumental wall paintings and digital panels.
Building on this exploration of Byzantine influence, Eleftherios Kostans of Cosmos Philly contributed his photographic works featuring St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Valley Forge, PA. His images highlight the beauty of Byzantine-inspired architecture in contemporary ecclesiastical settings, further emphasizing the exhibition’s theme of continuity and adaptation. Beyond the visual experience, the exhibition extends its impact through engaging events that deepen the audience’s understanding of Byzantine heritage. An Artist’s Reception provided attendees with the opportunity to interact with Christ Kamages and George Kordis, gaining firsthand insights into their creative processes. Further enriching the exhibition, the Dean C. & Zoë S. Pappas Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies will host the Rev. Dr. Demetrios J. Constantelos Memorial Lecture, commemorating the anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. This historic council, which affirmed the divinity of Christ and established the Nicene Creed, remains a foundational moment in Christian theology, influencing worship practices, doctrinal teachings, and liturgical traditions across Christian denominations today.
“Byzantine Reflections” is more than an art exhibition; it is an immersive experience that encourages visitors to engage with the rich history, spiritual depth, and aesthetic brilliance of Byzantine culture. Art enthusiasts, historians, and those interested in the interplay between tradition and modernity will find much to appreciate in this thought-provoking display. With the exhibition running through March, there is still ample time to visit the Stockton University Art Gallery and explore the profound impact of Byzantine art and architecture.
