Upper Darby, PA – St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, February 5, 2012
While much of the country had its eyes on Indianapolis and the Super Bowl, the Greek-American community gathered for a different kind of showdown: the 32nd annual Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA) basketball playoffs.

Friends, families, and parish members filled the gym at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Upper Darby for the first round of competition. Eight teams from across the region—from Broomall, PA to Egg Harbor, NJ—battled it out in a day full of energy, intensity, and surprises.

The biggest upset came in the final game of the day, when 5th-seeded St. Thomas of Cherry Hill knocked out 4th-seeded St. Demetrios on their home court.

The action continues next weekend in Egg Harbor, NJ, where the semifinals will be hosted at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
