The Delaware Valley Greek Orthodox Basketball League tipped off its postseason yesterday with a packed gym and four high-stakes playoff games at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church. Fans from across the region gathered to watch their teams battle for a spot in the next round—and they weren’t disappointed.
Game 1: St. Demetrios (Girls) 16, St. George (Media) 15
In what may have been the most dramatic game of the day, fifth-seeded St. Demetrios (Upper Darby) pulled off a stunning second-half comeback to defeat St. George of Media.
St. George went into halftime with a commanding 15–6 lead, but St. Demetrios shut them out in the second half, slowly chipping away at the deficit. With clutch defense and composure down the stretch, St. Demetrios edged out a 16–15 victory to advance to the second round.
Game 2: St. George (Media) Boys 35, St. Demetrios (Upper Darby) Boys 32
In a back-and-forth battle, the St. George boys held off St. Demetrios in a physical game that stayed close from start to finish.
Buckets were traded throughout, but it was St. George’s late-game defense and team effort that secured the narrow 35–32 win and a ticket to the next round.
Game 3: St. Luke (Girls) 29, St. Thomas (Girls) 17
Third-seeded St. Luke of Broomall faced off against sixth-seeded St. Thomas (Cherry Hill) in a girls’ matchup that showed why St. Luke is a contender.
They controlled the tempo on both ends of the court, combining patient offense with disciplined defense. The result: a confident 29–17 win that sends them into the next round—one they’ll host at home.
Game 4: Evangelismos (Boys) 42, St. Luke (Boys) 26
In the final game of the day, Evangelismos of Bustleton came in with something to prove—and they delivered.
Though they faced early offensive struggles, their relentless defense completely shut down St. Luke, allowing them to pull away decisively. Evangelismos now moves forward with momentum after a 42–26 victory.
