A special Greek Independence Day event in Philadelphia will bring together history, tradition, and community on March 25, with a presentation exploring a lesser-known chapter of the Greek Revolution: the city’s own role in it.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, 2026, will mark Greece’s national holiday with an evening that connects local history to one of the nineteenth century’s most celebrated struggles for freedom.

The centerpiece of the program is a presentation titled “Philadelphia’s Role in the Greek Revolution,” to be delivered by George G. Horiates, Esq., a longtime New Jersey and Pennsylvania attorney and past Supreme President of AHEPA.

His talk will examine how Philadelphia, a city defined by its own revolutionary founding, became part of the transatlantic network of philhellenism that helped sustain Greece’s fight for independence from Ottoman rule in the 1820s.

Horiates has been active for decades in Greek-American civic life, with leadership roles in national organizations and participation in commemorative events tied to Greek independence and diaspora history. His perspective reflects both professional experience and long-standing engagement with the community.

The event will be held at the Danielle Kousoulis Greek Center at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church and will begin with a traditional bakaliaros and skordalia dinner, the dish that appears on Greek tables every March 25. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m., followed by the presentation at 8:00 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.
