World Greek Language Day Marked at the United Nations

The Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations will hold a World Greek Language Day side event at United Nations Headquarters in New York on Monday, February 9, 2026, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., in Conference Room 5.

The event, titled “World Greek Language Day: Language, Dialogue, and Multilingualism,” is organized to mark World Greek Language Day and will feature a panel discussion with speakers from the United Nations system, UNESCO, and academia, followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

According to the official invitation, UNESCO proclaimed February 9 as World Greek Language Day at its 43rd General Conference in November 2025, recognizing the enduring contribution of the Greek language to world civilization.

Program

The published program includes the following remarks and presentations:

  • Welcoming remarks by Ambassador Aghi Balta, Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations
  • Introductory remarks by Eliot Minchenberg, Director of Office and UNESCO Representative to the United Nations in New York
  • Remarks by Movses Abelian, UN Under-Secretary-General and Coordinator for Multilingualism
  • A presentation by Dr. Gwen Grewal, Onassis Lecturer in Ancient Greek Thought and Language at The New School, titled “Ancient Greek in Contemporary Dialogue”
  • Q&A with the audience
