June 9, 2013. Philadelphia – Cosmos Philly and the Greek American Heritage Society of Philadelphia have announced that they will be partnering in a series of ventures promoting and recording the history of the Greek-American community of Philadelphia. Over the course of the next year, a series of historic interviews and short documentaries will be produced about the Greek-American community.
These oral history interviews and documentaries are being developed for the permanent online archives of the Historical Society and will be made available to the general public for viewing via both organizations.
Imagine a place where the history of our people, organizations, and churches will be accessible on-line. The on-line site will feature historic documents, stories, films, photos, and music all about the Greeks of Philadelphia.
These projects will help unite our community and provide a foundation for future generations. In the following video, members of the community and the Society talk about the importance of this undertaking.
“200 years from now, when a child Googles his great-great-grandfather’s name, and a video pops out with his grandfather dancing at St. Demetrios hall on New Year’s, I could only imagine, I’m getting goose bumps just imagining what that child will feel like 200 years from now,” says Nick Yiantsos, a Heritage Society board member.
Last week, the organizations launched the first of these ventures, by sponsoring a photo contest titled: “LOVE YOUR YIAYIA AND PAPPOU”. The contest is also geared to introduce the Society and Cosmos Philly’s efforts and to get the Greek community involved in sharing their own history.
