May 20, 2012. Under perfect weather conditions this past weekend, The St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church (Upper Darby, Pa.) held it’s annual Greek Festival. From across Marshall rd and the Cobbs Creek parkway in West Philadelphia, the big white tent covering nearly the entire parking lot could be seen from miles around. Underneath it, the St. Demetrios staff was hard at work making sure everything ran smooth. Two bands, Atlantis and Seizmos enterntained the crowds through the weekend, while families, friends, and the community were treated to all sorts of Greek delights. Inside the church hall, freshly prepared Greek food served cafeteria style awaited and enticed visitors; while souvlakia, kokoretsi and fish were prepared outside in barbeque style pits. Throw in a little retsina with Greek music to your visit and it made you feel like your in Greece. Then there are the pastries, let’s not forget them as well. If you got there early enough you got the opportunity to try them before they were all gone. This year many of them were sold out by Sunday afternoon.
