Upper Darby, PA – St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church dominated the annual AHEPA 445, track meet this past Saturday. In fact, they were the only team in attendance. The annual event, once a cornerstone of the community has been in serious decline these past years. There were no representatives from other churches or schools at the one time historic event. Even the bleachers, which once saw families fill stands, were also completely empty.
Memorial field at Upper Darby h.s. has been the home the historic event since it’s inception, 37 years ago. In the past, the Greek community attended from all corners of the Delaware Valley. This past weekend appears to have been, “the final straw that broke the camels back”. Even the annual march around the field, that honors the Olympics was cancelled. A serious decision needs to be made as to the future of this one time historic cornerstone event.
