Cherry Hill, NJ – The St. Thomas Greek School opened its doors this past Thursday to a record number of students, marking a new chapter in its long-standing tradition of Greek language and cultural education. More than 160 students have enrolled for the new academic year, making it one of the largest Greek schools in South Jersey.
The school, established in 1967 as part of St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church, is experiencing particularly strong growth in its early grade levels. Enrollment in kindergarten alone has increased by nearly 40%, leading to the addition of a second classroom to accommodate the new students. The first through third-grade classes have also steadily grown, surpassing enrollment in the upper levels.
At its peak in earlier decades, the school once enrolled over 170 students before enrollment declined in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, with the John Ballis Hellenic Educational Center fully operational, St. Thomas seems to have regained its full strength—solidifying its position as the largest Greek school in the region.
The increase in enrollment shows a renewed dedication by families to preserve the Greek language and heritage, and it demonstrates their confidence in the school’s committed teachers and facilities.
