November 26, 2012. St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church, Upper Darby, Pa. The big showdown for the league lead in the Greek Orthodox GIRLS and BOYS Basketball league happened this past weekend. Evangelismos church of Bustleton Ave, in Philadelphia, met up with Holy Trinity of Egg harbor. In a pair of tightly fought games where leads were exchanged during each game.
GIRLS
The build up to week eight saw two teams making strides for this league lead. Holy Trinity, well coached and experience met up with the “BIG GIRLS FROM THE BOULEVARD”,Evangelismos. Their raw talent was put to the test. In the end, a few 3 point shots and hard, experienced defense prevailed for Holy Trinity. FINAL SCORE: 22-17. (HOLY TRINITY/EGG HARBOR)
BOYS
Again,Holy Trinity came in, well coached and disciplined tied with Evangelismos for the league lead. But Evangelismos has beaten Holy Trinity the last three times they’ve met, one of which was last years playoffs. Both played a hard first half and matched up well during the 1st period. By late in the second quarter a 20 point lead had developed proving again that Evangelismos appears to have matured as the team. A late third period run by Holy Trinity was made reflecting a score that made the game look closer than it was. But Evangelismos stuck to their game plan in the second half taking away the rebounds and playing solid defense. A decisive victory, gave the boys sole possession of the lead and appears to be unstoppable. FINAL SCORE:47-37 (EVANGELISMOS/BUSTLETON)
Congratulations to all teams on their effort last week.
