Preserving Our Past And Restoring History

In the heart of Olde City Philadelphia, where the first “Greektown” came to be, St. George Cathedral has stood through the ages. The historic church was developed by famed architect John Haviland in 1821 as an Episcopalian spiritual place of worship. Upon being acquired by the Greek community in 1922, it became a Cathedral under the leadership of Archbishop Athenagoras. It was the adopted new home for many immigrant Greeks and the soul of a community.

Today, this splendid architectural marker is part of many Philadelphia historic tours. Its classical facade, stained glass, and iconography blend two faiths together spanning nearly 200 years and makes a unique statement for Hellenes and Philhellenes can be proud of. Its significance to Philadelphia and the Greek community is immeasurable and it is in need of restoration.

On Sunday, October 4, 2015, St. George Cathedral will host it’s annual Autumn Ball, which will benefit the continued restoration needs of this historic church. The memorable evening will be hosted at Adelphia Restaurant. Music and dancing provided by Atlantis of Philadelphia, who is celebrating its 30th Anniversary, will also be part of the evening. Your support and attendance will convey a message of unity. Whether you are a member of St. George or any other of our local Greek Orthodox churches, or your family was once, years ago, a member of St. George, your help is needed and the restoration of the Cathedral is not only important to our Greek-American community, but to the history of Philadelphia – the City of Brotherly Love.

The parishioners of St. George cordially invites you to attend and join them. Bring your family and friends and be part of our preserving our past and restoring history. Help preserve this historic Greek Orthodox Cathedral for the generations.
