Broomall, PA — The community mourns the loss of Ekaterini Spyratos, who passed away on January 12, 2025, at the age of 88. A cherished member of the Greek Orthodox community, Ekaterini’s life was defined by resilience, devotion, and a deep love for her family.
Ekaterini was born on September 23, 1936, in Palia Vlachata, Kefalonia, Greece. She was the daughter of Dimitrios Karalis and Xanthoula Antonatos. Her early years were marked by the struggles of war and natural disasters, experiences that shaped her strength and determination.
In 1968, seeking a brighter future, she emigrated to the United States with her husband, Stavros, and their two daughters. The family settled in Philadelphia, where Ekaterini worked tirelessly to support her family and preserve her Greek heritage. She began her career as a baker at Kypselis Baking Company, sharing the rich flavors of her homeland, and later became a skilled seamstress known for her impeccable craftsmanship.
Ekaterini’s home was the heart of her life. Her cooking and baking became the cornerstone of family gatherings, with her famous tsoureki and spanakopita beloved by all who had the privilege of tasting them. She also found joy in gardening, creating a warm and inviting environment that reflected her generous spirit.
She was predeceased by her husband, Stavros, and her brothers Gerasimos, Othonas, and Panagis. Ekaterini is survived by her siblings Olga and Dionysios (Peristera); her daughters Maria Canakis (Nicholas) and Anastasia Floratos; grandchildren Katerina Christakos (Michael), Panagiotis Canakis (Joanna), Spiros Floratos (Kristi Dodbiba), Stavros Floratos, and Marina Floratos (Steven Calakos); and six great-grandchildren. Her family, whom she considered her greatest achievement, will continue to carry forward her legacy of love and strength.
The family invites the community to honor her life at a viewing and funeral service on Friday, January 17, 2025, at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Luke in Broomall, PA. The viewing will take place from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at noon. Interment will be held at Fernwood Cemetery in Lansdowne, PA.
