The Society of Epirotes of Philadelphia “Omonia” will celebrate their 10th annual affair “Tsipourovrathia”. It will be hosted at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church in Upper Darby, on March 5th, 2016. Epirotes and fellow Hellenes from around the Delaware Valley will enjoy an evening of traditional Epirotiko music by the Lazaros Paraskevas orchestra. Tsipouro, everyone’s favorite elixir, will be served throughout the evening. Traditional Patsas will also make a showing and be served late at night following the banquet style dinner.
So what is Tsipouro? Well if you enjoy ouzo then this is the event for you. Made as a sort of pomace brandy, Tsipouro is a strong distilled spirit containing 40-45% alcohol by volume and is produced from the pomace (the residue of the wine press). It comes in two types: pure and anise-flavored. All evening long, members of The Society of Epirotes of Philadelphia will be making the rounds serving it up-all you want. It’s a great night to come out of the cold and warm up.
