George (Georgios) Tsiadis, 96, born on November 23, 1923, fell asleep in the Lord on December 9, 2019, surrounded by his family.

He was the beloved husband of the late Anna and loving father of Maria, Athineos, Kyriaki (Efstathios) Fragogiannis, and Nicholas (Tina) Tsiadis. Devoted grandfather of Ritsa (Philip) Nanos, Nick (Lia) Athineos, Marianna (Zisis) Siokos, and Denise (Dave) Rodgers, and doting great-grandfather of 10: Katerina and Anna Nanos, George, Stathoula and Alexandra Siokos, Marilena and Dimitri Athineos, and Kyriakos, Chryssa, and Andrew Rodgers.

George was born in the village of Keramos on the island of Chios, Greece, one of 11 children of Nicholaos and Kyriaki. He is survived by his sister Stamatia, and countless loving nieces and nephews, both here and in Greece.

In Greece, he worked as the blacksmith/artisan for the towns of northern Chios. George crafted tools, wrought-iron railings, and other metal creations, in addition to shoeing the neighbors’ donkeys or horses. Being highly respected and well thought of by all, he was elected mayor of Keramos for several terms. His home served as the village city hall, and, when the county doctor came to town, the family’s home would serve as the medical clinic. Always with a smile on his face, he made everyone in his company feel special and welcomed.

George immigrated to the U. S. with his wife and three children in 1970 and settled in Philadelphia. He worked very hard to provide a better life for his family, realizing the American dream. Starting as a dishwasher, as so many Greek immigrants did, he eventually owned various restaurants, including the Coffee Tree on Cottman Ave. in the Northeast.

His life was centered around his family and friends. Kindhearted, sociable, and hospitable, George had a presence about him, which is why so many people affectionately referred to him as “Pappou.” An unforgettable gentleman, he will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Annunciation-Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, 7921 Old York Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027, or St. Panteleimon Church, Keramos, Chios, Greece, care of the Tsiadis family.
