Upper Darby, PA – Evangelismos won both the girls and boys games in the final week of the GOYA basketball league on Sunday. The Black and Gold secured the number one (boys) and number two (girls) spots in regular league play and are serious contenders for the league championship. Playoffs are scheduled to start following the holiday break.
Jimmy and John Armentani led the Evangelismos boys team to victory over St. Demetrios with a three point show. The brothers were unstoppable, with five three pointers in the first half, and combining for 26 of their team’s 30 points. It was complete domination by Evangelismos, who controlled the tempo and boards at both ends. “Team defense was the key to victory”, said Coach Jim Contoudis, who cheered and distributed hi-fi’s to his players throughout the afternoon. They closed down St. Demetrios’ Chris Dawson, limiting him to only four points, and kept the rest of St. D’s from penetrating the middle with their size. Their win gave them a bye for the first round of the playoffs as they finished in first place in the boys division. Final score: Evangelismos 54, St. Demetrios 31.
Good ball movement and control of the boards gave the girls of Evangelismos the win over St. Demetrios-who struggled to score. Right from the start, Evangelismos took control of the game with their fast paced offensive attack. Bucket after unanswered bucket fell in for Evangelismos and left St. Demetrios further behind. By halftime, Evangelismos led 21-6. Their size and speed was never challenged as the girls of Evangelismos took home their fifth victory and secured second place in the girls division. Vjosana Gjeli of Evangelismos led all scores with ten points. Final score: Evangelismos 31, St. Demetrios 6.
