Edison, NJ – The Fifth District AHEPA Cancer Research Foundation hosted its 26th Annual Fall Gala at Pines Manor on Saturday evening. The event raised awareness and awarded funds for cancer research. Closing in on a million dollars, the Foundation went from $885,000 to 945,000 this year, getting one step closer to a million dollars. On this night, $60,000 was awarded to the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Weill Cornell Medical College – Children’s Blood Foundation, and Fox Chase Cancer Center.

The Axios Award was given this year to Shridar Ganesan, M.D., Ph.D. The award has been given out since 1996, to some 15 recipients. The Axios Award is presented to an individual or individuals whose humanitarian purposes and endeavors have contributed in helping to find a cure for cancer, unselfishly and devoutly in the name of mankind.

Chairman Antoniette Marousis-Zachariades also awarded and recognized George Horiates from the AHEPA district #5 for his past dedication and service as chair from 2013 to 2015. Guests enjoyed the rest of the night by dancing to the sounds of Alpha Orchestra who featured Greek and American music. The annual event continues to be a key national fundraising project and proves again that AHEPA is the leading Greek-American organization when it comes to fundraising efforts.
