Matina Trantas, 90, fell asleep peacefully on the morning of April 16, 2020, of natural causes. She was the daughter of Michael and Zoe Stoffan.
Matina was a devoted mother to Georgia and Steve Weiss, and Joyce and George Gutchigian. Matina was a dedicated and beloved Yiayia to Stefanie, (Yanni) Amanda, and Michael. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Michael, and her devoted husband, Sam. She is also preceded in death by her sisters Alice and Ida. She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Matina was a devout Greek Orthodox Christian who spent many years volunteering at Nazareth Hospital, and often would be found praying for people she met. She was a long time member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. There she spent many years as a Sunday school teacher and Philoptochos president. Matina was also a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Elkins Park, and a member of Philoptochos Nausica.
Matina loved to walk, have her hair done, and bake – she was known for her famous koulourakia. Her family was her greatest joy. She will be deeply missed.
Funeral services are altered due to Federal, State, CDC, and Church rules and will remain private at this time. A memorial service celebrating her life will be scheduled at a later date. Donations may be made to Annunciation Church or Philoptochos Nausica.
