Upper Darby, PA – It was a memorable day at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church this past Saturday. One might say it was a day for historic recognition. Marilena Drakou and Dimitri Papaioannou celebrated their wedding and then their daughter, Christiana’s baptism. It was also a first, for Father Gregory, St. Demetrios’ new priest. His first baptism and wedding at the church.
The couple who live just next door to the church started the day with a traditional march to the church led by Pontian musicians. A custom from Greece, generally not celebrated here in the states, but one that pays homage to the rich culture. Outside the church, the bride circled and danced with the musicians and family before entering with her fiance for the big moment.
A short time later following the wedding ceremony and a brief intermission, the new koumbara Maria Agatsiotis entered the altar area with Christiana for the baptism. The couple then emerged outside to a crowd throwing rice. The two celebrations came together as one for the reception, that was shared in the church hall with family.
