Philadelphia, PA – Penelope Lagakos, daughter of Judge Lagakos, shares the story of how her father convinced the Greek government to donate an authentic replica statue of “the Charioteer of Delphi” to the United States, during the American bicentennial. Along with sculptor Shane Scranton, they share thoughts and the history of the ancient sculpture as part of the Museum Without Walls audio tour.

The 5th century BC replica statue stands proudly at the parkway entrance of the Philadelphia Art Museum. A plaque below reads, “from the cradle of democracy in the ancient world to the cradle of democracy in the new world. From the People of Greece to the People of America”. The copy was created by Nikos Kerlis and Theodora Papayannis on the occasion of the American Bicentennial.
