Wayne, PA – The World Cup is just around the corner and next month, Philadelphia will host a historic friendly match up between Greece and Nigeria (June 3rd/PPL Park). Soccer, will play center stage for us in the coming months. But “believe it or not”, yes, I used the old cliche. Our Greek community has another team to be proud of in the world of sports.
Local team United FC, a Greek soccer team that plays at YSC sports facility in Wayne, Pa. is the leading the local league. YSC sports facility is where the Delaware Valley amatuer soccer scene in arguable the best place to watch soccer.
On Thursday evening they continued on their reign and held off the Tilted Kilt by a score of 3-1. The Tilted Kilt is currently in 3rd place, and gave the Greek team a run in a league that hosts some 22 teams.
But the experience, speed and coaching of the team was to much for the Kilt to handle. United controlled the ball throughout the game and constantly brought on offensive pressure. On no less than four occasions, United hit the goal post. Instead of the score ending up 3-1, it could have been 7 to 1.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the team showed why they were in 1st place by controlling the tempo and protecting their lead the rest of the game. They managed to score a late goal and solidified their victory and position in the league.
