Ewing, NJ – The College of New Jersey opened their doors to the new organic chemistry suite yesterday, which was donated by SigmaPharm Laboratories. Doctors Amalia and Spiro Spireas were recognized and awarded medals for their generous contribution to the college by president Barbara Gitenstein.

Dr. Jeffrey Osborn and Dr. Spiro Spireas addressed the crowd of members from TCNJ and SigmaPharm Labs, who then visited the new facility where a plaque marked and greeted the visitors. Dr. Spireas and his wife stood by for a photo op before entering for a tour.

The goal for the organic chemistry suite is to provide an interconnected set of labs that are designed for 21st-century pedagogy and research in organic chemistry. In particular, the state of the art fume hoods are located around the perimeter, with adjacent but separated long runs of lab benches. This will allow for a clean separation, yet smooth transition, from wet chemistry to dry bench surface for instrumentation, with ergonomic and efficient access to the extended benches and a center island.

The suite includes two organic chemistry laboratories, each with an entry backpack/coat storage room and a shared preparatory lab. The total suite encompasses 3,980 square feet.
