Upper Darby, PA – St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church had a full day of events this past Sunday. From a veneration of the cross to a 40-day blessing, St. Demetrios saw a day that brought together the community.
The Pontian Akritai of Upper Darby attended church in folk attire for an artoklasia. Some twenty members from the local chapter stood by for religious service, while the Greek school students of St. Demetrios joined them to circle the church to venerate the cross. “The cross symbolizes strength and hope” as described by Rev. Economos Panagiotis Lekkas.
Two, forty-day blessings for newly welcomed church members were also celebrated during services. “At last, two boys”, said Father Lekkas with a smile on his face. This was the third Sunday of Lent observed by Orthodox Christians.
