Wilmington, DE – Meet the “Loukou-Mamas,” the parishioners of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. You can see act churning out the Greek version of funnel cake known as Loukoumades through the week at the areas biggest festival in Wilmington Delaware.

What started on Tuesday at lunch appears to have no end in sight. The food lines inside and out are still wrapped around the block of the church. Over the course of four hours during our visit, guests stood in line drinking beer, having a glass of wine and enjoying the dancing, while waiting for gyros and souvlakia. The tasty treats were all being prepared fresh by the church parishioners for 43 years now. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church is the biggest and only church in the area and has a commanding presence each year with this event, that signals summers unofficial arrival.

Inside, the church hall, you could shop for Greek trinkets, clothes and enjoy a cafeteria style meal that would compete with any fine dining experience. Again, parishioners had spent weeks preparing for this annual affair. Their family – food traditions were being showcased, and it seemed like the whole state of Delaware (and beyond) was on their campus. Mousaka, Spanakopita, and lemon chicken were all being served, fresh and hot. And the guests loved it.

As you wandered through the food lines, cheerful members would assist and place a very generous portion on your plate of whatever you could imagine that’s Greek. Some folks were even carrying extra plates and doggie bags with extra orders to eat at home. When you were done your meal, you could walk up the stairs and shop for jewelry and clothes from Greece. Crosses, bracelets, and beautiful scarfs were just part of the options on sight. A print gallery of scenes from Greece was also on display, along with Greek kitchen items. Olive oil, soap and more added the flavors and options that made you feel like you were in a Greek village.

There’s live Greek music by Seizmos, folk dancing and much, much more. It’s the perfect treat for the whole family. The five-day affair goes on through Saturday. Doors open at 11: 00 pm and close at 11:00 pm. There’s roadside pick up as well if you want to order out during the day.
