Michigan Ahepans deliver second truckload of 1,944 milk gallons on Oxi Day

Washington, DC – Members of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (Order of AHEPA), delivered their second round of aid to help victims of the Flint water crisis, announced Supreme President Andrew C. Zachariades. AHEPA Automotive District 10 (Michigan) donated and delivered 1,944 gallons of milk to the Flint community, via the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, October 28, 2016. AHEPA members donated the same quantity of milk on March 25, 2016.

According to state public health departments, optimal nutrition can play an important role in minimizing the amount of lead absorbed and stored in bones, especially in children. When minerals such as calcium and iron are deficient, lead absorption is increased.

“Although the Flint water crisis is no longer in the headlines, the need to aid the victims remains,” said Craig Theros, who chairs the “Milk for Flint” drive. “AHEPA has not forgotten them and will continue to offer aid.”

Theros thanked to Flint Kroger #404, Corunna Road, and Store Manager Pat McGuire, who helped with the milk’s cost and the coordination of its delivery. Theros said a third delivery is planned for December 2016.

WJRT-TV 12 News of Flint provided media coverage of the donation.

“We commend our Ahepans and the American Hellenic community of Michigan for their continued commitment to the people of Flint,” Zachariades said. “Service and philanthropy are at the heart of our mission and vision, and we must work together to assist the victims of this crisis. We ask the American Hellenic community to consider helping us by making a donation to AHEPA District Ten, which is spearheading this effort.”
