The “Good Company” is a casual gathering of Greek-American men, mainly retirees, who meet weekly in a café-style setting to enjoy coffee, share enjoyable company, and discuss topics of interest. The meetings are conducted in Greek, and everyone is welcome to join—especially new members, who are greeted with great enthusiasm. The group meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
The “Kali Parea” (Καλή Παρέα) began 18 years ago in November with three friends: Chris Vranas from Mt. Laurel, George Kousoulis from Haddonfield, and Chris Sivas from Cherry Hill. They initially met for coffee at the Moorestown Mall. As they invited others, the gathering quickly grew, prompting a move to a small room in the basement of St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, NJ. Because of its popularity, they eventually relocated to their current venue in the St. Irene Hall in the same basement. This unique social gathering fosters a culture of sharing historical perspectives, humorous anecdotes, educational tidbits, fond memories of Greece, and experiences as Greek-Americans.
Over the years, the group has flourished and currently comprises 44 members. Weekly attendance often exceeds 30 people, especially from Fall through Spring, when many return from annual visits to “The Homeland,” Greece. The members’ roots span throughout Greece, including the Ionian and Aegean islands, the mainland, and the Peloponnese.
Most members were born in Greece and arrived in America as young men to seek their fortunes in the “New World.” They faced the challenges typical of young immigrants and became successful businesspeople, professionals, family men, and community leaders. While they love their mother country deeply, they also share a strong affection for their second homeland, the USA.
Unfortunately, several members have passed away over the years, as many are retirement age. Over twenty of the original group members are fondly remembered. We are fortunate to still have two of the founders, George and Chris, with us.
Although the “Kali Parea” intentionally remains unofficial to preserve its relaxed, café-like atmosphere, it has become a recognized and respected part of the Greek community.
Several members with restaurant experience actively volunteer in the kitchen and serve at various community functions, including the annual “Agora” (Greek Food Festival) and the monthly luncheons held by the Maturity Club. They also support and participate in other social organizations within St. Thomas Church. The “Kali Parea” contributes to the church and various philanthropic societies, such as the Philoptochos. Together with the Maturity Club, they co-sponsored one of the saints in the recently completed iconography project at St. Thomas Church in Cherry Hill.
Additionally, the “Kali Parea” honors the ladies—wives, sweethearts, and friends of the group—by hosting an annual “Ladies Day” luncheon at a local venue.
