Upper Darby, PA – The Pontian “Akritai” organization of Philadelphia will commemorate the Genocide of 353,000 Pontians and loss of their homeland at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, this Sunday. Dressed in traditional folk attire, members of the organization, its leaders and descendants will be in attendance. Father Georgios Kouzelis will host a special ceremony in honor of the Pontian Genocide.
A procession to the Genocide Monument (outside the church) will follow Liturgy service, where the community will observe the historic day that recognizes May 19th. On this day, Kemal Ataturk landed in Samsounda on the Black Sea coast and began the devastating assault and invasion on Pontos.
Wreaths and flowers will be laid at the monument, and a prayer service will follow. The day will be highlighted by Dimitris Giannakaris of the “Akritai”, who will read a monolog about genocide & diaspora. A short lunch and speeches will follow at the church. The event is open to the public, and the entire Greek community is encouraged to attend to show support of this tragic time in history.
