Elkins Park, PA – Greek Independence day celebrations were performed by the Greek School of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church this past week. Historical reenactments, poems, and hymns, all part of the 200 anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, marked the event that also featured several speeches by Greek school teachers and staff.
Greek school teacher Dimitra Spilioti hosted the presentations, and Debbie Sourias, the Greek School Principal, welcomed and thanked the members of the congregation. Father John Johns thanked all those involved and blessed the members of the congregation.
The Annunciation Elkins Park Greek School was founded in 1901 as a youth ministry of the Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Community of Philadelphia. The program strives to implement the educational aims and goals of the Charter of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the decisions of the Clergy-Laity Congresses. The school’s mission is to instruct children in the modern Greek language, instill a sense of pride and respect for Hellenic heritage and history, promote our faith values, and encourage fellowship among Greek Orthodox families and church communities.
